Tecolotes: Pueblo Pottery Owls 1890 to 1960 (07/27/2007)
On Friday, July 27th, Steve Elmore Indian Art will present its 6th annual Pueblo pottery show. This exhibition and sale will feature over 40 original ceramic owls made at the pueblos of Zuni, Acoma, and Cochiti between 1890 and 1960. Throughout history owls have been celebrated for their wisdom, courage and foresight. Pueblo potters began making pottery owls as early as the 1870s and over the decades have created an original American folk art form characterizing the owl in a vast array of forms. Many of the owls in our collection are depicted with chicks on their backs, under their wings and as storytellers. Each owl in the show is handmade of native clays and pigments and pit-fired in the traditional manner. To see so many examples in one place is a great opportunity for understanding the creativity of Pueblo potters working in a tradition that spans thousands of years.
The entire collection will be posted on the website on July 30th.
